The Smashing Pumpkins, Paris

The Smashing Pumpkins are back, that's for sure!

Wow that gig was amazing! Almost 3 hours, loads of old stuff including a few obscure b-sides, two encores, an acoustic bit in the middle (the complete setlist is here), in other words the perfect gig!

Billy Corgan might be 40 but he still plays guitar like a semi-god, and Jimmy Chamberlin is the hell of a drummer, undoubtedly. The other three musicians were good enough, nothing impressive but they were not the ones we came to see really...
The only downfall I can find is that Billy only said like three words, announcing a tour in big venues but that was about it. Eh well...

As far as the new album is concerned, from what I heard it seems like it is what Machina should have been: A proper Smashing Pumpkins album, maybe not their best but definitely worth listening to. Full-on guitars, kick-ass solos and all that. There seem to be only one quiet song, God and Country. And it sounds really good actually, very catchy chorus riff on acoustic guitar. The new single, Tarantula (download here - I'm not sure this is legal but what the heck), is really good, and is not the best new song they played.

Also worth mentioning, the band had announced that there was a free-taping policy for bootleggers so you can find videos of most of the gig on YouTube and DailyMotion. Watch Billy play 33 solo here...
