Ron Asheton, R.I.P.

It was all over the news today: Ron Asheton was found dead at his home on Monday.

For those who don't know, Ron was with his brother Scott in a band called the Stooges, in the late 60's. They were not particularly successful, and broke up after 3 albums, loads of drugs and abysmal gigs. However, the singer of that band was a guy named Iggy Pop, who later became successful and over the years The Stooges became a cult pre-punk band. So they reformed in 2000 and started touring in order to cash-in on their 'cult' status.
OK, maybe this is a bit harsh a description, and I actually love The Stooges' 3 original albums (which I must say aged spectacularly well for music that old!).

Anyway, what I wanted to say about that is that Ron was 60 yo and died of a heart attack, at his home. Now, this is something worth noting! He was part of a generation of musicians (including Iggy Pop, Bowie, Lou Reed, ...) who did pretty much all the drugs they could, and still managed to avoid OD'ing or AIDS over all those years. And that's one massive achievement! So, if only for that, R.I.P, Ron!
