Interpol @ Alexandra Palace

God this was frustrating!

Interpol is one of the few bands that I really, really like at the moment; the song "pioneers to the fall" is one definitely in my top 10 favorite songs ever.

But there is no denying it: Live, interpol is boring!

The evening had started well, the opening act being Blonde Redhead. They're a NY-based 3-piece band that have been around for a long time. Their songs are always very dense and quite cool; they do lack a proper singer and that's probably why they never got mainstream success, but they are great songwriters.
In addition, they were joined on stage by the Interpol drummer for one song, and the Paul, the Interpol singer, joined in to play guitar on the last song. That was really cool.

As for Interpol, well. I can't say I was disappointed really, i had seen them in ferstivals before so I knew what to expect. I guess that somehow for a proper gig it would be different. So yes I was disappointed in the end.
The problem, in a nutshell, is that Paul, the singer, completely lacks charisma and energy. As a result he really looks like a guy doing lip-synch on the stage (and rearranging his hair every now and then). That's not mentioning the keyboardist, whose presence on stage I didn't notice until the end of the set when he actually left!
The guitarist is the only guy that brings some life into the show, humping around and showing some empathy with the music.

As a consequence, all the songs, even the more danceable ones like Slow Hands, left the crowd stone-cold; I have hardly seen less enthusiasm for an encore, that's how bad it was...

If you want an example of their lack of stage presence, watch this video for their latest single, Mammoth (brilliant song btw!!!):

Frustrating, really it's the right word.
