Today being St Patrick's day, I think this is a good idea to talk about my favourite Irish band. No it is not U2, but the somehow less famous JJ72.
For those who don't know them, they released their first, eponymous album in 2000, and was a big critical and commercial success. It is, ideed, a very good album. They then supported Muse in their european tour, which is how I discovered them (I was still living in Paris, back then).
In 2002 they released their second album, I to sky, that didn't work very well. It is indeed a strange album, not as good as the previous one, but still contains amazing songs such as Serpent Sky.
Then, in 2005 two singles were released, the excellent She's Gone, and the less attractive Comming Home, but they both failed to sell and the band split before their third album was released. Mark Greaney, the singer, is now doing solo stuff (and he is supporting Simple Kid at Scala on 14th May - I'll be there!)
Now, what I find scary with JJ72 is that I had always assumed talented musicians might struggle to have a break through, but once this is achieved then the sky is the limit. I was convinced that only NME's latest new big thing could disappear after the second, crappy album. But it seems that I was wrong and young, talented bands can have the same fate.
Damn this world is mercyless.
