National Anthem

I have discovered this petition, thanks to the silver-footed Thetis. The idea is to get the UK national anthem, “God Save the Queen”, replaced by the song Gold by 80’s band Spandau Ballet.

To be honest, I haven’t signed it. I have never heard that song, and didn’t know the band (they were never big in France, it seems). According their page in Wikipedia, they founded the New Romantic genre, along with Duran Duran… Yeark!

But I do find the idea quite funny. When I was still at school (it seems so far away…) I saw the Smashing Pumpkins live in Paris and for the song Tonight Tonight, Billy sang “ce soir ce soir”, the French translation.
Well, the day after I started a petition to have the French national anthem changed to the French version of Tonight Tonight… I think I only got 5 signatures…

You're starting to sound like an old rock groupie: "yeah, I saw the Sex Pistols in 1978, I was there!" Come on, you should talk about the NEXT BIG THINGS, not old bands like the Smashing Pumpkins!!!

Sometimes I think I AM an old rock groupie...

Plus I am not NME, so I'm not going to take a random band to be the next big thing.
